People are naturally intrigued about everything from voting to the process of forming a government in every democratic nation . They seek to satisfy their curiosity in a variety of ways. This was essentially the case even in just concluded Lok Sabha election. Credibility issues with the exit polls results surfaced fast because the majority of the post election results corroborated the findings. These exit polls or election surveys do not reach any conclusion so easily. The lengthy efforts and hard work of a few unique people over months are placed behind this . These unique individuals are those that possess in- depth knowledge of the caste , political, social, demography and figures of election of the previous several years. These professionals known as psephologist and entire science is known as psephology .

WHAT IS PSEPHOLOGY

The study of elections , voting behavior , and voting patterns is known as psephology. To understand how and why individuals vote the way they do , it entails analyzing election data , including voting trends , voter demographics , and election outcomes . Psephologists analyze the influence of social, economic, and political factors on voting behavior and use statistical methods to forecast election results and evaluate the efficacy of campaigns .

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Greek word ''psephos'' which means '' pebble'' is where the name originates. Ancient Greeks used this word to indicate voting. The first practice of exit poll was seen in America in the 16th century when the behavioral movement was started there. The reasoning behind the argument was that , since meteorologists utilize science to make forecasts, why not apply the same concept to politics ?For this , the philosophers  suggested that, in order to monitor the success or failure of democracy , one should travel among the people rather than gathering information or forecasting from a library . This is because
, if someone responds immediately , there is 60 to 70 percent chance that their response is true . Exit polls are popular these days ; their findings are growing more accurate every day and have given this entire field of study a great platform. A work of psephology is one in which human behavior is closely examined in order to arrive at a conclusion.

How is it in terms of career

Psephology is a rapidly emerging and attractive career. In this, a conclusion is drawn after thoroughly analyzing the data and information  collected from various sources. This work is very challenging and hard work, especially during the election days, the headache of the psephologist increases further. They have to do tasks like investigating elections , collecting data and giving political advice. For this, they have to indulge in many types of research work, trips, meeting people etc. On the basis of their findings and information gathered, they are able to bring out a blurry picture of the election results. If we look at it, for the last few years, media and political parties have become completely dependent on this psephologist .

When will you able to do the course

Although no special course is conducted separately for this, but students who have obtained a degree in Political Science, Sociology or statistics in post graduation, consider it suitable for this job , considering the seriousness of the work of this field, post graduation post is included in it.  If the student has a doctoral degree in either political science, sociology, or statistics, he will be given preference.

To become a good psephologist , it is necessary that professionals  should understand the polarization of castes and opinions very well, otherwise they will never be able to reach a healthy and unquestionable conclusion. Along with these important qualities, they should also be hardworking and patient. They should also have data of last few elections. Knowledge of computer and internet can benefit in many ways.

Employment opportunities

After successfully completing the course, psephologist have many opportunities. From a few days before the elections till the formation of the government, their role is important. Research agencies, television channels, newspapers, magazines etc. need these people. Apart from this, political advice, teaching etc. these people are in great demand in parliamentary work and political reporting. If the professionals do not want to work with any organization or banner, then they can also provide their services independently. 

 Salary

There is no fixed line of salary in this. During election days, psephologist offer their services for a particular project on a huge package, whereas even as a teacher and analyst, they can easily earn ₹ 45 to ₹ 50,000. If they work as a freelancer  then there are many ways of earning for them. Today there are many election analysts who are earning lakhs of rupees per month and by joining them many other people are also getting work and money.
